Not for nothing is the area around this part of Ceredigion known as 'Little Switzerland'. In the near distance, the pine trees dominate the rolling uplands while in the valley stream, a short walk below the main road through the village, trout play in the crystal clear waters, fed by a cascade of dramatic waterfalls that have been delighting ramblers and nature lovers for centuries.

The Hafod estate, popular with walkers, ramblers and birdwatchers At the turn of the century, Pontrhydygroes was a watering hole for the landed gentry of Edwardian England who made their way here to enjoy the hospitality of the nearby Hafod estate. At its peak, this was a glittering stately home, sharing an architect with Buckingham Palace and a grandeur that was the equal of any of Europe's finest houses.
Fires, and subsequent neglect, have erased all but fleeting reminders of what once stood here, just a short walk from the Miners Arms but the surrounding parkland survives and provides a host of well marked, well maintained pathways through the magnificent pine glens and fields, across historic bridges and alongside enchanting rivers and streams.

A day isn't enough to see all of the Hafod, never mind the other delights within five or ten miles of the Miners Arms. Miners enjoying a well-deserved pint!

The Miners Arms is the last remaining Inn of five in the village of Pontrhydygroes which was once a busy silver-lead mining area with Mines at Frongoch, Cwmystwyth and Lywernog. The region is famous for the rare bird "The Red Kite" which can often be seen soaring above the nearby hills and valleys along with many other birds. As well as birdwatching the area is well known for walking, horseriding, fishing, golf and cycling and is on the Sustrans Route 8.

View of the Cliff Railway in Aberystwyth a popular mid Wales resort within easy reach of PontrhydygroesWith lots of attractions in the area there is always something to do.
